The 3 Types of Recession and How to See Them Coming

You Can’t Spell LOVE without L + V

Happy Saint Valentine’s Day to you all.

Valentine’s Day 2008

I spent Valentine’s Day 2008 at a Training Conference in Sydney. That did NOT make me popular with my beautiful wife, though I have two distinct memories of that conference:

  1. Flying Harmony down to Sydney and taking her out to Aria for the most expensive meal of our (young) lives. Business was going well, and Valentine’s Day was forgiven.
  2. Reading the AFR in the Swissotel mensroom and observing “Wow, share prices are really moving downwards for a change”.

Valentine’s Day 2009

By the following February 14 2009, most major global sharemarket indices had dropped by more than 50%.

Indeed, they had almost reached the bottom, and the Great Recession (aka GFC) was a fact of life. What a year that was!

Valentine’s Day 2025

Right now, we are not in a Recession – although the UK remains stagnant, and Donald Trump is one brainfart away from lopping 3% off US GDP by accident.

But these cycles are, well, cyclical. The time to prepare your business is in advance, when the business pages are hinting at concern not when the front pages are talking about a downturn in the present tense.

How do you start your preparation? This week’s video and article are a great start, especially if you follow some of the links to:
