Everything I Learned, I Learned from the Movies

Lessons from the World’s Greatest Cinephile

In 2019, I was asked to be the closing Keynote speaker for the Happy Lawyer, Happy Life Retreat in Kingscliffe, Australia.

The responsibility of the closing Keynote is different from the opening Keynote, and from any of the intervening Presentations or Plenary Sessions.

Often you are the only person keeping the whole conference from closing drinks; and if it’s been a successful conference then most brains are frazzled and nobody in the audience wants new content.

So the closing speaker must bring energy, and tie together the many themes of the conference so that every participant leaves having identified the value received and excited to change their life or business as a result.

So when invited, I spent several weeks pondering the focus I wanted to take for this important responsibility. And I landed on it: how to leverage the power of cinema to excite those in the audience and give a universal and empowering message at the same time.

In 2003, I became a Guinness World Record Holder for the longest movie marathon. Needless to say, I love a good movie. And we all know that even the most popcorn films are built around some deeper theme.

So, Everything I Learned, I Learned from the Movies: Lessons from the World’s Greatest Cinephile.

Watch the full keynote speaker video above. And while this topic isn’t one of my 3 primary Keynote addresses, the flexibility it affords (different clips, reinforcing different themes, and integrating with specific conference themes) makes it an option for any conference organisers looking for a speaker with energy and purpose.
